Heidi Mitchell explores the resurgence of home libraries, dedicated rooms showcasing carefully chosen book collections. Of course there are going to be those who have home libraries to illustrate how intelligent they are and that’s fine. But for me, a home library would be a dream come true. Oversized couches, comfortable chairs, and plenty of bookshelves crammed to capacity would be heavenly. (WSJ)

Patricia Cohen paints a fascinating picture of Ander Burius, the man who looted Sweden’s Kungliga Biblioteket (Royal Library) by stealing and selling rare books. An atlas that was published in 1597 by Cornelius Wytfliet (which is one of only nine copies in existence) was recently recovered. It sold at Sotheby’s in 2003 for $100,000; it’s estimated worth is $450,000. Someone needs to write a mystery or thriller series based on this man. Burius may have stolen books, but the sheer pettiness of the crimes set against the value of the goods catapults this into something so much more. So far there’s been a government inquiry, a radio documentary, and a TV mini-series. I know it’s not your usual, but Alan Furst, care to tackle this? (NYT)

Have you seen the (sometimes) obnoxious ads on Amazon’s home page touting themselves as a great marketplace for small businesses to showcase their wares? Seems like everyone is feeling the Amazon squeeze. Yes, Amazon will let you list your items for sale, but they might also undercut your business if it looks like you’re onto something. Jeff Peterson found that out when Amazon noticed the pillow pets he sold were moneymakers. They swooped in, priced their own product below his, and featured it in the marketplace taking a bite out of sales. Perhaps its time to think twice about doing business with Amazon? (WSJ)

News Corp. is on schedule to split up into two companies. That may mean 20th Century Fox film studio, Fox broadcast network and Fox News channel will be separate from the newspapers, book publishing, and education businesses. (WSJ)
